According to a press release from the city’s fire department, the first fire took place around 3:30 p.m. at the Imperial Motel on Port Watson Street. Upon arrival, city firefighters noticed “light smoke” coming from the motel building.

The statement noted that city firefighters found “a fire in the walls and ceiling” in one of the rooms in the motel building. Firefighters were sent to the roof to “check (an) extension and prepare to ventilate” the top of the building.

The fire in the motel building was “under control within 10 minutes,” the statement said. One person was moved from the building, but no injuries were reported.

Then at 7:15 p.m., the city fire department responded to a reported fire at a home on Evergreen Street, according to the release notes. Upon arrival, the statement said city firefighters discovered a “fire in the kitchen ceiling” of the home.

City firefighters brought the blaze under control “in approximately 10 minutes,” the statement noted. No injuries were reported.

Both fires are currently under investigation. The one on Evergreen Street is being investigated by the City Department’s Fire Investigation Team to “determine the cause and origin” of the fire, the statement said.

When Super 8 opened in 1974, it charged $8.88 a night for a room. The award was part of an aggressive – even fanciful – marketing campaign to take on the Santa Barbara-based Motel 6 for the title of most affordable roadside lodging in the country. When Motel 6 opened in 1962, it charged $6 per night. Today, the County of Santa Barbara Housing Authority is engaged in efforts to acquire one of each of these iconic chains in hopes of turning both into permanent, supportive housing for homeless people.

The Super 8 deal — for a 65-room motel in Hollister and Fairview just steps from Goleta Airport — looks poised to succeed, thanks to $16.5 million in public funding for the purpose. Goleta City Council — sometimes seen as the political linchpin of NIMBY sentiment — held a special council meeting to not only endorse the proposal, but to contribute $600,000 to the fundraising effort. County supervisors have contributed an additional $3 million to help ensure residents receive “comprehensive” services to help them with all their difficulties from day one.

A similar effort to acquire an 80-room Motel 6 in Santa Maria, however, is meeting significant resistance from the Santa Maria mayor and city council, and it remains to be seen whether that deal will ever materialize.

John Polansky of the Housing Authority pointed out that both projects involve the development of permanent housing. “These will not be homeless shelters,” he said. “These will not be centers for the homeless. This is permanent housing where people have annual leases.

Polansky said he plans to launch a neighborhood outreach offensive — via Zoom — later this month or early February. In doing so, he will re-plough the fields he worked 18 months ago when the Housing Authority first appeared set to acquire Goleta’s Super 8, an architectural testament to the optimistic low-cost modernism of the 1960s, with a phalanx of towering palm trees serving as scenic sentinels.

That deal fell through when a New Jersey motel franchisor, Wyndham Vacation Resorts – representing 20 brands and 9,280 locations – stepped in and promised to keep the “Super 8 flag” flying.

“We didn’t lose it because of the price,” Polansky said. “That was the flag, the big Super 8 sign.”

Wyndham brochures describe the motel’s location as “where value meets convenience.” But with COVID raging, it’s unlikely the chain got as many business travelers as it had hoped and attracted too many homeless people instead. Polansky said landlords told him it’s not uncommon for people who get their checks at the start of each month to splurge for a few days of respite at the Super 8 before hitting the streets again.

This Intercity Trail parking lot, bordering Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace, was the scene of a shooting on Thanksgiving Day 2021.

It’s 2:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving afternoon. Just off Highway 99, an Edmonds family gathered to celebrate – four children, nine adults. Some are in the kitchen, watching the kitchen. Everyone is talking, laughing.

Suddenly, there is a popping sound. “We heard a noise, we looked up to see the broken glass,” a witness told police. The ball lodged in the frame right next to where the owner was standing.

“The glass broke, we assumed it was a BB gun,” another witness said. “We ran to the back fence, heard footsteps and three or more gunshots.”

Half a block away, another witness heard “pop, pop, pop. And I knew it was a gun. I spoke to this witness. To protect them, we do not name the person. “So I got out to see more,” the witness said, “and saw an old black van with two guys in it; one holding what looked like a rifle firing toward the entrance to the parking lot.

How many strokes? “Oh, I heard like 27-30,” the witness replied. “The police picked up a lot of shell casings.” This parking lot is less than 10 feet from the intercity trail. Several days later, two residents of a nearby condo reported that they had also found bullet holes in their walls.

No one was injured in this shooting. Everyone involved escaped before the police arrived. No one has been arrested.

The Thanksgiving Day shooting is the latest — and most alarming — moment in a four-month crime wave that swept through the neighborhood around 222n/a and Highway 99. During this period, police responded to 110 calls.

It’s 110.

“This is the number one public safety issue in Edmonds,” acting deputy chief Josh McClure told us. “This is the greatest violence we have ever seen (in the city).” In four months, Edmonds police alone made 20 arrests for drug trafficking, gun crimes, stolen cars, violations of court orders and outstanding warrants.

In an Oct. 5 chase and shooting that began after a confrontation at a motel on Highway 99, two suspects were injured. Both survived; a suspect did so because of emergency first aid from Edmonds officers after being shot twice in the legs.

At least one suspect in the violence of several months is still in detention, in another city. Others made a deposit. Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood Police, as well as the City of Everett Gang Task Force, joined Edmonds in an attempt to stem the crime wave.

There’s a link that police say connects the 110 calls in the neighborhood over the past four months – the Emerald Best Motel in the 22200 block of Highway 99.

Police response to the Emerald Best Motel – December 16, 2021. (Photo courtesy of Edmonds Police)

McClure said the site had become a “safe haven” for some gang members who moved from Everett in mid-September. This, he says, is where the trouble started. Shots were fired in the parking lot of the motel and in the surrounding area. At least five reports involving firearms are “associated with this motel…and we know there are more than that,” he added. Edmonds also reports seven drug arrests (for methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl), 10 felony arrests, five stolen vehicle arrests — all related to people visiting or staying at the motel.

The motel’s longtime manager, Peter Kim, said the police had it all wrong.

“A lot of people came over from Everett…someone else, really nice people, rented the room for them,” Kim said. It was mid-September. “And then Everett Gang Unit called us to tell us what these people were, so we cleared out about 15 rooms…all related people,” Kim added. “We had to act immediately. »

Kim said that “we don’t associate with these people; we tell them to leave. He added that “local officials call the police; if the manager doesn’t call, then the manager is involved. He insisted the motel wanted to share information with the police; but that “every time we try to cooperate, they (the police) see us as negative; we try to help them.

Acting Deputy Chief McClure said police were aware that some “hard-working, law-abiding” people were living or staying at the motel – and that police feared for their safety. But, McClure said, “we’ve explicitly told them (the manager and the owner) what’s going on, and I’m getting a denial about it.” McClure added: “If we can identify people in certain rooms and know who they are, why can’t the motel know who it is?”

Emerald Best Manager Kim says the motel has 32 security cameras throughout the resort and they have shared photos and videos with police. McClure agreed the motel shared a video, but that, he said, was the extent of the cooperation.

The motel is adjacent to the Plum Tree Plaza Mall, which was the target of an arson attack in September. Fourteen businesses were set on fire or smoked out. There were no arrests. Police will not say if they believe there is a connection between the two.

From mid-September to mid-December, Edmonds and nearby police are aware of at least six incidents involving firearms at or near the motel.

October 5

  • Police report an “ongoing shootout” between two suspects at the motel along Highway 99. Both men were injured, one critically.

October

  • A suspect pointed a gun at two people in a room at Emerald Best.
  • Everett Gang Unit chased a suspect in this area who had a stolen weapon.

November 23

  • “A drugged man fired a gun in the motel parking lot,” according to a police statement.

November 25

  • The Thanksgiving Day shooting in the nearby Intercity Trail parking lot.
    • A bullet nearly hit an owner inside the house.
    • Two nearby condos reported bullets in their units.
    • Police say they believe two of the shooters were staying at the motel.

December 16

  • Drive-by shooting in the motel parking lot. No one was hurt.

Edmonds Acting Deputy Chief Shane Hawley, who oversees Edmonds patrol units, told us “we have to go up to this (the motel) thinking everyone there will be armed.” He said that during a shooting, there were at least 20 officers at the scene from different cities. “Nobody there (the motel) cares that we’re there; there is no concern that officers and flashing lights are there. A typical response now, he added, is to send multiple units to that scene on any call.

The police told us that what is happening in this neighborhood is more than a little drug trafficking or small beef. In one bust, they confiscated 1,000 fentanyl tablets. In another case, someone who officers believe was part of the group using the motel threw a pound of crystal meth. This is, Hawley told us, “not your typical drug operation.”

McClure and Hawley agree that Edmonds Police “can’t arrest us to get out of this problem”. Officers from the Everett Gang Unit told Edmonds that some of the people they had been dealing with since September were “known gang members.” Hawley put it this way: “It’s a regional problem, working its way through Snohomish County.” Edmonds joined Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood and the Everett Gang Unit in an attempt to end the crime wave.

Some cities have turned to abatement or chronic nuisance laws to close, condemn, or even demolish property that has become a serious and chronic community problem. In Seattle, harmful activities include “assault, fighting, drug dealing, prostitution, gangs, and weapons violations.” Edmonds city code permits clean-up procedures; it follows state law in this situation.

Edmonds won’t say if this is something he will pursue, only adding that they are considering a number of options in cooperation with police and nearby towns. “We are working with multiple partners to address this issue,” said Edmonds Police Chief Michelle Bennett. “Arrests of violent criminals are effective, but not if they know they can return to places that support their dangerous activities and we are fortunate that no innocent people have been harmed. Your officers will continue their proactive efforts in these places, but we will also use additional resources and approaches to gain more cooperation from certain companies.”

Edmonds Mayor Mike Nelson also spoke out, “The gun violence that has impacted our Highway 99 community will not be tolerated,” the mayor said. “Our officers have responded to multiple shootings that put them and our community as a whole at risk. We will not allow corporations to be a haven for dangerous criminals. We will provide the support and resources necessary to address this critical public safety issue.

Edmonds City Council member Will Chen’s belongings are in the Highway 99 corridor and he fears for the neighborhood. “This is one of the most important issues for our city and our neighborhood,” he said, adding that “(what happens there) will impact not just 99, but the entire community. the city and the region”. He wants the city to “get the situation under control so that our businesses and residents can feel safe and live in this area.”

Emerald Best Motel manager Kim insisted that “if we see anything illegal we kick them out…drugs…we see it and want to kick them out…we want to keep this area safe; we try very hard.

Acting Deputy Chief McClure said police calls to the area have dropped slightly since mid-December, but he believes motel owners need to take more ownership of their property. He warns that innocent people have been put at risk and that the trouble caused by some who turned the motel into what he called their “safe house” is still “the biggest public threat to Edmonds”.

A new memoir, The Motel: High Times in ’90s Ibiza, is set to be published by Unbound.

Iconic club promoter Claire Manumission, who ran the legendary Ibiza Manumission parties alongside her partner Mike at Privilege, has penned a memoir which offers a “dark and humorous look at hedonism in 90s Ibiza embraced by Drugs”.

“During its 14-year history, more than 1.5 million people have attended Manumission in Ibiza,” read a press release. “It was the biggest weekly party in the world, earning it a spot on the Guinness World Records. In 1998, as Manumission entered its 5th year, Mike and Claire decided to take over an abandoned brothel on the outskirts from Ibiza Town and turn it into a 24-hour party destination – The Motel.

“Under the neon glow of a sign that promised Bar, Bed and Breakfast for a lost summer, this acid-free dollhouse became home to a wild menagerie of DJs, models, international pop stars, best-selling writers, New York strippers and don’t ask questions drug dealers – all of Bohemia was there.”

Speaking of the book, Claire Manumission said: “The story is inspired by all my years in Ibiza, woven through time: from the carefree early days of meeting and falling in love with Mike – on his quest to universal freedom – how Together we turned Manumission into the biggest weekly party in the world.

“The sex shows, the controversy, the betrayals and finally the abolition of the Manumission but it’s mostly told by The Motel, the wild long weekend of my 24th birthday – the weekend Norman Cook met Zoe Ball and Lisa I’Anson missed her Radio 1 broadcast and was later fired very publicly on BBC News at Six.The Motel is a dark, humorous look at hedonism in drug-embraced 90s Ibiza.

“It’s the story of the Motel – but it’s also the story of the 1990s when, for a few brief years, a generation decided to throw off the chains of the past and be free to do what they wanted to do”.

The book is currently 55% funded, with a number of tiers of reward donations ranging from £25 to have your name printed in The motel: High Times in the Ibiza of the 90s, to £10,000 to have a dedicated page, nickname and inclusions in some of The Motel’s craziest stories.

Two men who allegedly abducted a 14-year-old girl from the streets of Dallas have been charged with producing sexually explicit images of the child, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Chad E. Meacham, has announced.

Lukumond Olatunji, 43, and Vincent Thompson, 41, were arrested Wednesday in Dallas and charged through a criminal complaint with production of child pornography and complicity in child pornography. They made their first federal court appearances before U.S. Investigative Judge Irma C. Ramirez this afternoon.

According to the complaint, the defendants stopped next to 14-year-old Jane Doe as she walked home from school in southwest Dallas on October 23. The child, who was wearing her school uniform at the time of the crime, later told investigators she believed they were going to drive her to her grandmother’s house.

Instead, the defendants drove her to an alley, where they allegedly raped her and recorded some of their crimes on Mr Thompson’s mobile phone. They then drove her to a motel, where they rented a room and allegedly raped her again.

Jane Doe finally managed to escape. As she fled from the hotel, she met a woman who led her to a nearby gas station to call for help. Visibly frightened and disoriented when the police arrived, the child was nevertheless able to describe the defendants and their clothing to the police.

Officers immediately went to the motel and detained Mr. Olatunji and Mr. Thompson. In an interview, Mr Olatunji identified Jane Doe as “the girl Vincent picked up”. He initially denied sexually abusing the child, but later admitted to having sex with her. Mr Thompson also identified Jane Doe as “the girl we picked up in South Dallas”. He admitted having sex with the child and recording his sexual assault on his phone.

A criminal complaint is only an allegation of wrongdoing, not evidence. Mr. Olatunji and Mr. Thompson are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

The Dallas Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations and the Dallas Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Magliolo and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenna Rudoff are prosecuting the case.

NORTH BERGEN, NJ (CBSNewYork) – The co-owner of a motel in New Jersey gains notoriety, gathering more than 800,000 subscribers on TikTok.

It’s not for the money he earns, but for the way he treats his guests and helps them through some of their toughest times.

As CBS2’s Thalia Perez reports, it started out as a free night for everyone who followed her on TikTok, but the overwhelming response showed Brian Arya that during the pandemic many faced housing insecurity.

Arya, who goes through LTMotel on the social media site, says he quickly started offering free rooms to anyone who needed a place to stay, no questions asked.

Arya’s TikTok page was already gaining momentum for her comedy sketches with Steven, a guest who became a permanent motel tenant 20 years ago, and the page is just as humorous as it is inspiring.

He says once his 800,000+ subscribers heard about his generosity, donations poured in. In a TikTok, he says that a stranger who didn’t even stay at the motel paid for the next guest’s room.

Some of the donations were food and clothing.

Arya says her family have owned the Lincoln Tunnel Motel on Tonele Avenue in North Bergen for over 30 years.

“When I got here it was a 1.4 star rating and I joked a lot about it,” Arya said.

Now, he says the motel’s rating has jumped to 3.5 stars, but the biggest job, he says, after taking over the family business is delivering a simple message.

“I know not everyone has a 41-room haunted motel available to help people, do they?” But everyone has something to give back, ”he said.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – The City of Birmingham’s latest drug-control effort leads it to sue the owners of the Southern Comfort Motel on West 3rd Avenue.

The lawsuit against Krisna, Inc. says police responded to several drug and crime-related calls on the property and made undercover drug purchases there, in addition to filing complaints from locals. City attorney Nicole King declined to comment specifically on the lawsuit, but explained how the city decides its time to go to court.

“Usually when it comes to that particular point where a prosecution is actually brought, it means that a significant amount of criminal activity has taken place on the premises, as well as we have received complaints from outside sources, we letting it be known that the criminal activity took place at a particular location, ”says King.

“We are looking at the amount of drug activity, the severity of the activity and the type of activity that has taken place in the premises over a repeated length of time. We’re looking at a particular series or, or pattern that may take place at these locations. “

King says the city is also in negotiations with the owner of another problematic property, which it would not name.

The Southern Comfort Motel is just a few blocks from the Town Motel, the owners of which the city sued in September. The city says it has also received calls regarding drug-related activity and made several drug seizures.
